Mercury in gas and oil deposits: corrosion problem

نویسندگان

چکیده

Mercury naturally occurs in gas and oil deposits a wide range of concentrations covering six orders magnitude: up to 5 mg/m 3 natural 600 ppm (mg/kg) crude oil. hydrocarbons poses number technological environmental problems: contamination equipment products with this extremely toxic element, poisoning catalysts, initiates intensive corrosion equipment, thereby enhancing accident risk. Metal mercury causes rapid electrochemical aluminum alloys (e.g., heat exchangers) liquid metal embrittlement (LME) steel leading heavy accidents. The novel technology based on Zeeman atomic absorption spectroscopy enables selective determination oil, condensate, naphtha gas. Examples the application for gas, are presented.

Control of corrosion in oil and gas production tubing

L. SMITH Controlling corrosion in production tubing is essential for maintaining production and for preventing loss of well control. Materials for use downhole have to meet criteria for corrosion resistance and also mechanical requirements. The potential corrosion rate can be estimated and the risks of sulphide stress corrosion cracking assessed on the basis of the anticipated environmental con...

Reliable corrosion inhibition in the oil and gas industry

The objective of the work was to undertake a literature review on the subject of corrosion inhibition in the offshore oil and gas industry to understand the current issues. The application of chemical corrosion inhibitors can significantly reduce the rate of corrosion of carbon steel pipelines due to the presence of CO2 and/or H2S. An inhibited corrosion rate of 0.1 mm/year can typically be ach...

Materials and corrosion trends in offshore and subsea oil and gas production

The ever-growing energy demand requires the exploration and the safe, profitable exploitation of unconventional reserves. The extreme environments of some of these unique prospects challenge the boundaries of traditional engineering alloys, as well as our understanding of the underlying degradation mechanisms that could lead to a failure. Despite their complexity, high-pressure and high-tempera...

Corrosion Risk Assessment ( CRA ) in the Oil and Gas Industry – An Overview and its holistic Approach

In recent times, the Risk Based Inspection (RBI) engineering approach has been extensively used in the Oil and Gas industries to maintain the plant integrity and thereby continual operation of the assets. Sometimes, the type of corrosion risk and its consequences can be either overlooked in the RBI approach due to inadequate knowledge of the metallurgy, chemical reactions, resulting corrosion m...
